Oh, lip balms! I lovelovelove lip balms!! Moisturising, tinted, flavoured and medicinal. A nice pair of moisturised lips can open all sorts of doors, literally… So, with the greatest pleasure, I give you my tried and tested lip-balms:
I started with an old faithful but with a modern twist: Vaseline ‘Rosy Lip’ Lip Therapy. I really like these little Vaseline tins and have always had one knocking around my hand-bags. The ‘jelly’ is made with rose and almond oils so it ticks many important boxes: it’s fragrant, it’s nourishing and I loved the shiny, dewy appearance it gives my lips. This balm gets top marks and a gold star for being multifunctional with a modest price of £1.49
I then went ‘all posh’ and treated my lips to Eve Lom’s Kiss Mix. This one felt a little… swampy? It didn’t feel as luxurious as I had expected, my lips just felt a little smothered. The mintyness of it was lovely and it was deeply moisturising and doubly handy to have around as it claims to protect your kissers from UV rays. It adds a subtle shine and it moisturises but it’s just not that ‘special’ – not like the brand’s legendary, amazing cleanser that I do hail as one of the best. I say “shop on” at £12.23 from Space Nk
I next tried a friend’s favourite, Carmex. This is also a golden oldie that has stood the test of time. The sturdy and retro tin packages a sound formula: Softening, Nourishing and also, antiseptic – this is a very element comforting when you think about the heavy, muggy, dirty air we city dwellers breath in and on to our lips. Carmex contains camphor and menthol which creates a tingly and refreshing sensation – it feels like it’s doing good. This tingly ‘do gooder’ balm also contains SPF 15 and Salicylic Acid, which helps to prevent cold sores – an ideal daily appliance for those who are prone. Carmex costs £2.49 and is available from Boots, amongst many other independent pharmacies.
So, the winner of this week’s Balmy Army tried and tested is… Vaseline’s Rosy Lip Therapy! Carmex came a very close second and only missed out on first place because it wasn’t tinted.
